Now that my Service Centre is near complete, on early Sunday morning of May 11, I took it upon myself to fulfill my promise to the rakyat of Wangsa Maju. The joy of the exercise was to cover as much ground as possible to thank my voters, meet them and hear them out. I began with the territory at Teratai Mewah.
Overall, from my first-hand knowledge and the feedback I received wherever I went, the impression I got was that the people of Teratai Mewah and the constituency of Wangsa Maju had been grossly neglected.
The spontaneous out-pouring of complaints and grouses by the rakyat only highlighted the fact that the problems they faced in Wangsa Maju in general were not creations of a week ago nor a month ago. Their woes had been on-going sore-points of the rakyat for years and years past. To admit outrageous dereliction of duty by past representatives of the rakyat, at this juncture, would be an understatement.
I was told, in the past, many promises had been made by the authorities and these have not been delivered todate. For example, a 70 year-old grandmother told me that a zebra crossing was promised for many years but nothing happened. "How am I to cross the road? Do they want me to die?" she complained. However, I stated that I cannot categorically promise the voters something that I cannot deliver. Simply because we are not in government and we do not have the power and machinery to help us achieve them. However, I promised them that I will do my utmost best to serve and help them.
The voters were also aware that those people who had been attacking me in the press and asked me to get DBKL to paint their flats as "promised" were politically motivated. I also clarified that the rakyat who needed to solve their problems should come and see their MP and talk to him and not go to the press. The voters were receptive.
The 'meet the people' sessions were cordial and the voters understood my difficulties because I have to start from scratch. I also informed them that if there were a few persons having problems to please come to my Service Centre; and if they were many of them then I will go to meet them.
I also told them that outside of Wilayah Persekutuan every parliamentary constituency will have 3 State Assemblymen working together with the MP. Here we do not have that luxury. I stressed that we have to co-operate so that I can perform my work as a Parliamentarian and at the same time as a State Assemblyman. I also told them to visit my blog and post problems and to give me ideas.
All in all, the rakyat of Wangsa Maju were understanding and they vouched their support to help their MP in order to help themselves. For this, I am most thankful and it will encourage me to go the extra mile for the rakyat of Wangsa Maju.
Adakah mereka nak saya mati?” rungutnya.
Teratai Mewah Market at Jalan Langkawi. Pasar Teratai Mewah di Jalan Langkawi.
Would you believe it? There had been no running tap water at the market for years. The people had to make their own arrangement to tap water from elsewhere.
Percaya tak? Pasar ini tiada bekalan air bertahun-tahun. Orang sini kena mengambil air dari merata tempat.
I also did an on-the-spot collection for the Myanmar Cyclone Disaster Fund. Slightly over an hour, we collected RM535,00. One of our members and I topped up the sum and the final donation handed to a Malay Mail reporter was RM700-00. We are the citizens of the world and we must help in whatever way we can to victims of natural disasters.
These are awful sights. If tourists were to see these, they will have a bad impression of Malaysia. Further, such rubbish "dump" is a breeding place for rats and other pests. I will be calling upon DBKL to construct a rubbish dump / rumah sampah for Teratai Mewah Market.
Now we know why Wangsa Maju is infested with rats! The uncollected rubbish everywhere is their source for food. When we get rid of this 'food source,' the rats will die of hunger naturally. Let's not try to solve the rats problem by putting the cart before the horse. Let's get rid of the rubbish first - and the rats will disappear!
I also visited Kg Lee Rubber and had a dialogue with the Committee Members of Persatuan Kg Lee Kong Chian. Their president is Mr. Ng Chui Chong.
Saya juga melawati Kg Lee Rubber dan mengadakan satu dialog dengan Ahli-Ahli Jawatan Kuasa Persatuan Kg Lee Kong Chian. Presiden mereka adalah Encik Ng Chui Chong.
